Then you have surely heard of the CCSE (Constitutional and Sociocultural Knowledge of Spain) exam. Sounds complicated, right? But don’t worry, it’s not as scary as it seems. And to help you understand everything (yes, EVERYTHING), we have prepared this complete guide from the Instituto Hispánico de Murcia, the official examination center of the CCSE. So take note, because what you are going to read can bring you one step closer to your new Spanish passport.

What is the CCSE exam and what is it for?

The CCSE exam is an official test developed by the Instituto Cervantes with a very clear purpose: to assess your knowledge of the Spanish Constitution, the fundamental laws and the social and cultural life of the country.

In other words, it serves to show that you know the basics (but important) about how Spain works: its government, its values, its history, its traditions, its territorial organization, etc. It is like a “citizenship test”, similar to the one done in other countries such as the US or the United Kingdom.

And yes, it is mandatory if you want to obtain Spanish nationality by residence, with some exceptions (such as minors or people with special abilities).

Who can take the CCSE exam?

This exam is aimed at foreigners over 18 years of age who are in the process of applying for Spanish nationality by residence or by naturalization card. It doesn’t matter your country of origin: if you reside in Spain and you have been there for the required time (usually 10 years, although there are exceptions such as for Ibero-American citizens or refugees), you have the right to do so.

Did you know that more than 300,000 people have taken the exam since it was implemented in 2015? This shows not only the interest in nationality, but also the desire to integrate into Spanish society.

What exactly is tested on the CCSE test?

Here’s the interesting thing: the exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions (with three answer options), and you only need to get 15 questions right to pass. Easy, isn’t it?

The questions are grouped into two large blocks:

Government, legislation and citizen participation in Spain (60%)

This includes topics such as:

The Spanish Constitution.

Organization of the State.

Rights and duties of citizens.

Political institutions (Parliament, Government, Justice).

Powers of the State.

Spanish culture, history and society (40%)

This is where the fun part comes in: national holidays, monuments, gastronomy, customs, media, territorial organization, etc.

💡 Fun fact: Some questions from the CCSE are on topics as varied as “What product is typical of Valencia?” or “What is the name of the current Queen of Spain?”. So studying for this exam doesn’t just inform you… it educates you!

Is the CCSE exam difficult?

Not at all. The required level is quite basic and accessible. You don’t need to know technical vocabulary or have a very advanced level of Spanish. In fact, it is designed so that anyone who has lived in Spain for a while (and has integrated minimally) can pass without great difficulty.

In addition, you have two opportunities included in the tuition: if you fail the first one, you can repeat once without paying again.

Do you have levels like the DELE?

No! Unlike the DELE (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language) exam, which is divided into levels from A1 to C2 according to your knowledge of the language, the CCSE is a single exam. There are no different levels or versions: the content is the same for everyone, regardless of your country of origin or your level of education.

How much does it cost to take the CCSE exam?

The price is regulated by the Cervantes Institute. In 2023, the cost was €85, and this amount includes:

Registration for the exam.

Access to the official preparation manual (available for free in PDF).

Two chances to pass.

Issuance of the official certificate with your grade.

💸 Useful tip: once you sign up, you can download the manual with the 300 possible official questions for free. No surprises! Everything that comes out in the exam is there.

Where can I take the CCSE exam?

The CCSE is offered in more than 240 authorized centers inside and outside Spain, and the Hispanic Institute of Murcia is one of them. Yes, you can take your exam right here with all the guarantees!

The calls are monthly (usually on the last Thursday of each month), and you can choose the center that suits you best when registering.

What happens if I don’t pass the first time?

Don’t worry. As we already said, you have two attempts included in the tuition. If you do not pass the first time, you can apply again at no additional cost, as long as it is within 12 months of your registration.

And if you still don’t make it… You can pay again and file again. There is no limited number of times to do so. The important thing is not to give up!

How to prepare for the CCSE?

Preparing for the exam is simple, especially if you have been living in Spain for a while. But if you want to play it safe, we recommend:

Download the free official manual on the Instituto Cervantes website.

Use the official CCSE preparation app, with tests and simulations.

Sign up for a preparation course at our institute. We guide you with clear and practical explanations, and help you understand the context of each question.

🎓 Fun fact: Many people claim that studying for the CCSE helped them not only pass, but also better understand how Spain works, and feel more connected to the local culture.

Superstitions and humor at the CCSE (yes, there is also that)

Although the exam is serious, there are those who face it with humor. Some students joke that if the exam falls on Tuesday the 13th or Friday the 13th, it is better to change the date! And, as we learned in our article on Spanish superstitions, don’t get married or embark… or show up for the CCSE on that day?

Luckily, superstitions don’t weigh on the exam, but preparation does. So it’s better to study well and leave the black cats out of the classroom.

In short… is it worth taking the CCSE exam?

Definitely yes. Not only is it a mandatory requirement to obtain Spanish nationality, but it is also an opportunity to learn about the country in which you live or want to live.

In addition, by passing it, you not only get a certificate, but you also show that you are committed to your integrationinto Spanish society. And that has a lot of value.

Do you dare to do it with us?

At the Hispanic Institute of Murcia we will be happy to help you every step of the way. We are an official examination centre, we offer personalised advice, and if you wish, preparation courses so that you can arrive with all the safety in the world.

And remember: passing the CCSE is easier than you think… and brings you one step closer to proudly saying:
“I am a Spanish citizen!”

Get Spanish nationality!
