Instituto Hispánico de Murcia - Putney High School trips (London)

Putney High School, located in the exciting southwest of London, is much more than just a school – it is an institution with a soul, a rich history, and a forward-looking vision. Founded in 1893, this all-girls school has been, from the very beginning, a symbol of academic excellence, educational innovation and female empowerment.

For more than a century, Putney has inspired generations of young women to think freely, act bravely, and dream big. What began as a small school committed to girls’ education at a time when opportunities for women were rare, has evolved into one of the UK’s most prestigious independent schools. Today, Putney High School remains a benchmark in the world of education thanks to its holistic approach that blends academic achievement, emotional wellbeing, and social responsibility.

A modern approach with strong roots

Although its origins date back to the 19th century, Putney High School is anything but old-fashioned. The school has kept pace with the times and continues to embrace innovative teaching methods that encourage intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and active learning.

Putney students enjoy a complete and varied curriculum that includes STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), as well as humanities, languages, arts and music. In this multidisciplinary environment, pupils not only acquire knowledge but also develop key life skills such as resilience, creativity, empathy, and intercultural communication.

Furthermore, Putney is strongly committed to the responsible use of technology in the classroom, environmental sustainability, and social inclusion – all of which are essential values in today’s world. Thanks to its focus on both personal and academic development, many Putney girls go on to study at prestigious universities across the UK, Europe and the United States.

Spanish as a bridge between cultures

One of the most valued aspects of life at Putney High School is its international outlook. The school actively promotes the learning of foreign languages, including Spanish, and encourages students to take part in cultural immersion experiences as part of their education.

Since 2011, Putney High School has organised school trips to Instituto Hispánico in the sunny city of Murcia in the southeast of Spain as part of its Spanish programme. The aim? To learn the language from within – not just in the classroom, but in the streets, in the homes, in the squares, in the markets, and in the everyday rhythm of a vibrant, welcoming culture.

Murcia, with its perfect mix of history, modernity and sunny weather, has become the ideal setting for this experience. Founded in the year 825 by Emir Abd ar-Rahman II, the city boasts a rich Arab legacy visible in its architecture, cuisine and urban design. Walking through Murcia is like walking through centuries of history – while also enjoying the joy of its people, the delicious marinera tapa, or the famous paparajotes – a traditional Murcian dessert made with lemon leaves, batter and sugar.

A unique experience: learning Spanish in Murcia

During their stay, the Putney students have had the opportunity to live like true Murcians. Staying with carefully selected host families, the girls have shared more than just a house – they’ve shared customs, conversations, and daily moments with their Spanish hosts.

In this authentic environment, the students have improved their Spanish in a natural, spontaneous and enjoyable way. Learning how to order in a café, chatting with the host grandmother, following a conversation about food, or understanding how a typical Spanish dinner is organised… everything becomes a practical class, with no need for books or blackboards.

In addition to Spanish lessons taught by qualified native teachers, the girls have taken part in a range of activities designed to deepen their understanding of Spanish culture: guided tours of historical sites, traditional cooking workshops, excursions to the Mediterranean coast, drama activities in Spanish, and even collaborative games to promote teamwork and oral interaction.

By the way, did you know…?

  • Murcia enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, making it one of the most pleasant destinations in Europe to travel and learn.
  • The city hosts one of Spain’s most colourful festivals: el Bando de la Huerta, a joyful celebration of the region’s farming traditions, full of traditional costumes, floats, flowers and delicious food.
  • Murcian tapas are among the most varied and flavourful in Spain. From ensaladilla rusa to caballitos (battered prawns), everything is bite-sized and bursting with taste!
  • The Murcian dialect has its own fun expressions: if you hear someone say “¡acho, pijo!” don’t worry – it’s just a typical local exclamation, a bit like “blimey!” in English.

More than a trip: a change of perspective

The most beautiful part of this experience isn’t measured in the words learned or the activities completed. The real value lies in the personal growth each girl undergoes – stepping outside her comfort zone, facing new challenges, and discovering new ways of thinking and living. Many return to London with a renewed self-confidence, a more open outlook on the world, and friendships that cross borders.

And it’s not just the students who learn. For us in Murcia, it is a true pleasure to welcome these curious, enthusiastic and respectful young women each year. They inspire us with their energy, their interest, and their ability to adapt. And yes – they also teach us about their culture, their tastes, and their unique view of the world. It’s a real, human and enriching exchange.

A tradition that continues

Since that very first visit in 2011, Putney High School has continued to trust in this Murcia immersion programme as a key part of its students’ education. Every year, the group returns with new stories, new smiles, and new lessons learned. And we, in turn, are delighted to welcome them, to accompany them on their adventure, and to watch how they grow – step by step – into global citizens.

Because learning Spanish isn’t just about learning a language. It’s about opening minds, hearts and horizons.

Here’s a compilation video of their last stay in Murcia. What a great week!

See you next year, Putney High School ladies!

Murcia will always be waiting with open arms, the sun in the sky… and a tasty tapa on the table.
