Since 2016, we have had the privilege of welcoming students from the prestigious AWTY International School in Houston, Texas, for a truly special and tailor-made educational experience in Spain. These month-long immersive programmes are carefully designed not only to accelerate Spanish language learning but also to provide young learners with a deep and lasting connection to Spanish culture, people, and places.
Every summer, our goal is the same: to deliver an enriching journey that goes far beyond the classroom walls, combining high-quality language instruction with real-life cultural immersion and travel across some of Spain’s most iconic and historically rich cities.
Spanish Language Learning That Goes Beyond Grammar Books
At the heart of our programme lies a strong commitment to academic excellence. Students take part in daily Spanish language classes, taught by experienced and highly qualified native instructors. These teachers are not only experts in second language acquisition, but also passionate about sharing their culture with young learners from abroad.
The classes are carefully structured according to the language proficiency level of each group—ranging from complete beginners to advanced learners. Sessions focus on building both oral fluency and written expression, using engaging, communicative methodologies that encourage active participation. From roleplays and debates to writing workshops and listening exercises, students are challenged and supported every step of the way.
One of the cornerstones of our philosophy is that language should be learned in context, which is why we place such emphasis on practical, real-life communication. Our aim is to help students gain the confidence to speak naturally, think in Spanish, and apply their knowledge in everyday situations.
Living the Language: Host Families and Cultural Immersion
Of course, learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends. One of the most powerful aspects of the programme is the homestay experience. Each student is welcomed into the home of a carefully selected host family, who plays a vital role in the immersion process. These families are chosen not only for their reliability and hospitality, but also for their genuine enthusiasm in sharing their way of life with international guests.
Living with a Spanish family allows students to immerse themselves fully in the culture, from sharing daily meals and joining in local routines to celebrating family customs. It also gives them the chance to practise the language naturally, picking up expressions and idioms that simply cannot be learned in a textbook.
For many participants, their host family becomes one of the most memorable parts of the trip—often leading to lasting friendships and return visits in years to come.
Discovering Spain: Excursions to Iconic Cities
In addition to the language and home immersion, the programme includes a carefully curated itinerary of excursions to some of Spain’s most fascinating destinations. Travel is organised with maximum safety and comfort in mind, using private coaches or national rail where appropriate. All trips are led by experienced, multilingual guides who provide historical, cultural, and geographical context along the way.
Among the cities we visit are:
- Madrid – Spain’s vibrant capital, rich in art, politics, and world-class museums like the Prado and Reina Sofía.
- Valencia – Known for its futuristic architecture and being the birthplace of paella.
- Granada – Home to the majestic Alhambra and a crossroads of Islamic, Christian, and Jewish heritage.
- Seville – Famous for flamenco, orange trees, and its breath-taking Gothic cathedral.
- Salamanca – A UNESCO World Heritage site with one of the oldest universities in Europe.
- Ávila and Segovia – Two historic gems with medieval walls, Roman aqueducts, and fairy-tale castles.
These visits are not just sightseeing opportunities—they are integrated learning experiences, offering students a first-hand understanding of Spain’s diverse regions, traditions, and historical narratives.
More Than Language: Building Skills for Life
The benefits of such a comprehensive immersion programme go far beyond language acquisition. By navigating life in a foreign country, students develop a wide range of life skills, including independence, adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and self-confidence. For many participants, this is their first extended experience away from home, and it plays a formative role in their personal growth.
Furthermore, exposure to a new culture fosters a broader worldview. Students return home not only with improved Spanish, but with a richer understanding of global citizenship, greater empathy, and an appreciation for perspectives different from their own.
These intercultural competencies are highly valued in today’s interconnected world—whether in academia, professional contexts, or simply as part of becoming a more open-minded and informed individual.
A Programme Built on Trust and Care
We understand that for families, sending a child abroad—even for a short period—can be a source of anxiety. That’s why we take our responsibility extremely seriously and place the well-being, safety, and comfort of our students at the coreof everything we do.
To provide full transparency, our programme director visits AWTY International School in Houston each year to personally meet with parents, answer any questions, and clearly explain the structure, costs, and safety protocols of the trip. From medical coverage to emergency contacts and carefully vetted host families, every detail is meticulously planned.
We want parents to feel confident that their children are in good hands—learning, exploring, and thriving in a supportive and enriching environment.
An Experience That Lasts a Lifetime
In summary, the AWTY International School Programme in Spain is much more than a language course. It’s a journey of discovery—of new words, new people, new perspectives. It’s an opportunity to step outside the familiar, grow in confidence, and develop a lasting connection to a country and a culture rich in history, warmth, and creativity.
We are proud to have hosted so many wonderful AWTY students over the years and to have witnessed the transformation that takes place—from hesitant beginners to confident communicators; from curious travellers to culturally aware young adults.
And what’s more, the friendships formed—both with fellow students and host families—often extend far beyond the trip itself.
