Do you like sports? Do you follow your favorite athletes? Murcia, in addition to being a land with impressive landscapes and vibrant culture, is also the cradle of great athletes who shine nationally and internationally. We are going to discover together those Murcians who have put the name of the Region of Murcia at the top of the podium.
Nicolás Almagro: the king of clay
Nicolás Almagro is one of the best tennis players in the history of Murcia and an absolute benchmark in clay court tennis. He was born in Murcia in 1985 and, from a young age, he showed that he had a special talent for the sport of racket. His key moment came in 2011, when he reached the “Top Ten” of the ATP ranking, being the first Murcian to achieve it. On May 2, 2011, he reached the ninth position, his best ranking to date, a record that still excites all tennis fans in the region.
Did you know that Nicolás started playing tennis at the age of four? His style is aggressive and characteristic: a powerful serve and a devastating forehand that have made more than one opponent tremble. Although his greatest specialty is clay, where his low shots and physical endurance have given him many victories, he has also shown great versatility on other surfaces.
During his career, Almagro has been recognized not only for his technique, but also for his fighting character and his professionalism on the track. Not only has he left a mark on Murcia, but he is an example for all young athletes in the region.
Alejandro Valverde: legend of world cycling
If we talk about cycling, in Murcia there is one name that stands out above all: Alejandro Valverde. Born in 1980 in Las Lumbreras, he is one of the most successful and respected cyclists in the international peloton. His record is a real marvel: winner of the Vuelta a España in 2009, multiple stage victories in the Tour de France, and podiums in world championships.
What makes Valverde special is his versatility: he can attack in the mountains, he has a very powerful sprint and, in addition, he is a tactical rider who knows when to save his strength for the decisive moment. For this reason, many consider him one of the best Spanish cyclists in history, along with legends such as Alberto Contador, Carlos Sastre and Óscar Freire.
In addition, Valverde has a special relationship with Murcia: he has been a perfect ambassador for the region, promoting his land around the world and demonstrating that with work, passion and perseverance dreams can be achieved.
Luis León Sánchez: the unstoppable Muleño
Another great Murcian cyclist who shines with his own light is Luis León Sánchez, born in Murcia in 1983 and affectionately known as “El Muleño” after his hometown, Mula. Luis León is recognized for his ability to stand out in stage races and time trials, being one of the best in these modalities in Spain.
In 2009 he had a spectacular season, winning stages in the Tour de France, Paris-Nice, Tour of the Mediterranean, Tour of the Basque Country and Tour du Haut-Var. In addition, he conquered the general classifications in Paris-Nice and the Tour of the Mediterranean. His technique, endurance and ability to maintain high rhythms make him a cyclist who never goes unnoticed.
The most curious thing about Luis León is that, unlike many runners who specialize in a single discipline, he is an all-rounder. This has allowed him to adapt to different challenges and scenarios, which shows his quality and love for the sport.

Benjamín Sánchez Bermejo: the promise of race walking
Although less known than other Murcian athletes, Benjamín Sánchez Bermejo has an exciting history. He was born in Cieza in 1985 and is a specialist in athletic walking, a discipline that combines technique, endurance and a lot of discipline.
The impressive thing is that Benjamin started walking when he was only five years old, an age at which most people don’t even know how to walk well! His dedication and talent have led him to compete in national and international championships, proudly representing Murcia and Spain.
Race walking is a demanding sport, little visible in the media but highly respected among athletes. Benjamin is an example of perseverance and passion, showing that in Murcia there is room for all kinds of sports, even the most technical and unknown.
María José Martínez Sánchez: queen of the track and the net
In women’s tennis, Murcia also has a star who shines with her own light: María José Martínez Sánchez, born in Yecla in 1982. This tennis player has excelled in both singles and doubles, but it is in the latter where she has achieved her greatest successes.
In 2009, María José won her first singles titles at tournaments such as Bogota and Bastad, and together with Nuria Llagostera she became one of the best doubles pairs on the WTA circuit, winning seven titles, including the prestigious Doha Masters.
Her height and agility allow her to dominate the net with great dexterity, and her style of play, based on patience and technique, have made her unbeatable in many matches. María José is an example of how perseverance and tactical intelligence can take an athlete to the top.
Laura Gil: by chance to basketball stardom
Laura Gil’s story is almost like a movie. He came to basketball by accident. When she was a child, she didn’t know what the sport was, until she was told at school that they were looking for tall girls to form a team. A friend encouraged her to try, and from that moment on her life changed forever.
Laura Gil Collado, born in Murcia, has had a meteoric career full of successes. He was an international in all the lower categories of the Spanish national team, achieving an impressive record: nine medals in six years between European and world championships.
In the senior team, Laura has won European gold, Olympic silver and world silver, showing admirable strength and commitment. At club level, in 2011 she was proclaimed champion of the League and the Euroleague with Perfumerías Avenida, the top continental competition.
Her story shows that sometimes luck and opportunity can change lives, but that talent and hard work make dreams come true.
