Have you ever dreamed of getting lost in a forest full of fountains, squirrels, centuries-old trees and mysterious trails? Well, in the Region of Murcia there is a corner where that dream comes true. It’s called Fuentes del Marqués and it’s in Caravaca de la Cruz, one of those towns that looks like something out of a medieval history book… but with WiFi.
Caravaca de la Cruz is not only known for its Santísima y Vera Cruz, for its festivals or for its impressive Templar castle. This municipality in the northwest of Murcia hides among its hills and ravines a natural space that, although many Murcians know, continues to surprise those who visit it for the first time. We are going to give you a virtual walk through one of the most beautiful, quiet and magical natural landscapes in the entire Region.
A walk among trees, water and legends
The Fuentes del Marqués are just two kilometres from the town centre of Caravaca, making them a perfect getaway to unwind without going too far. It is a protected natural area, where water springs directly from the earth, feeding small streams and canals that cross a forest full of life.
Its name is due to the Marqueses of Uribe, former lords of these lands, who had their private estate in this area. Luckily, today it is a public space open to everyone, and one of the most beloved corners by the people of Caravaqueños.
Walking through this place is like entering another world: you will hear the constant murmur of the water, see the squirrels scampering through the trees, and if you are lucky, you may even see some herons or birds of passage stopping in the area. Everything is enveloped in a calm atmosphere, ideal for hiking, reading, picnicking or simply breathing fresh air.
What can you do in Las Fuentes del Marqués?
Although the simple act of walking around is already a perfect plan, there are many things you can do in this special corner:
🌳 Relax in the middle of nature
Natural fountains, wooden benches, manicured paths and the shade of the trees create a perfect environment to unwind. Many students or young people from the area come here to spend the day, to study outdoors or to take photos for their networks.

🧭 Start hiking trails
From Las Fuentes del Marqués there are several routes to the Sierra del Gavilán, a mountainous area that hides ravines, spectacular views and much to discover. An ideal option for those looking for a little more adventure.
🏰 Visit the Templar Keep
Within the area is the Torreón de los Templarios, an old defensive construction that today houses the Nature Interpretation Center of the Region of Murcia. Here you can learn about the fauna and flora of the area, about geology and about how this special environment has been preserved.
A place with history (and many stories)
This forest with fountains is not only a natural space, it is also a place full of history and traditions. Nearby you can visit several very interesting museums that complete the experience:
- The Museum of the True Cross, where the history of the relic of the Cross of Caravaca is preserved and explained, a symbol that attracts thousands of pilgrims every year.
- The Museum of Solitude, which shows how the inhabitants of the area lived centuries ago: their tools, their clothes, their way of life.
And if you want to get lost among the trees, you can follow the El Copo trail, a wooded area that connects with the ravines of the mountains, where you can breathe that mixture of adventure and tranquility that is only found in places like this.
Seasons transform everything
One of the greatest charms of Las Fuentes del Marqués is that the landscape changes completely depending on the time of year. In autumn, ochre and gold tones dye the trees and the ground is covered with dry leaves. In spring, wildflowers decorate the edges of the trails and everything is greener than ever. In summer, the coolness of the water and the shade of the trees make it a perfect oasis to escape the heat. And in winter… If you’re lucky, you can see it with frost or even some snow, which gives it a fairytale feel.
Each season brings a different beauty, so if you fall in love with the place (as it often does), you have a perfect excuse to return again and again.
A perfect plan for a different day
If you are studying in Murcia or spending a few days in the region, Caravaca de la Cruz and Las Fuentes del Marqués are an ideal excursion. You can go by car or bus, take a short tour of the village (you will love its old town, its bars, its craft shops), and then spend the afternoon among trees, fountains and fresh air.
Take some food, a reusable bottle to refill with fresh water, and your phone with a charged battery to capture every moment. And if you dare, you can follow one of the signposted routes and feel like an explorer for a while.
Curiosities you’ll like to know
- The water that gushes out in Las Fuentes del Marqués comes from the aquifer of the Sierra del Gavilán, and is so clean that many people drink it directly.
- Archaeological remains have been found in the site that show that this place has been inhabited since ancient times.
- The name “Copo”, one of the wooded corners of the place, comes from the Latin cupa, which means “vessel” or “concave place”, referring to the shape of the land.
- Some local legends say that mysterious lights appear in these fountains at night, and that there are protective spirits of nature… Would you dare to explore them at dusk?
