Between September 29 and October 5, 2019, our company had the opportunity to be part of the Direct Trade Mission to Russia, a strategic initiative organized by the Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Services and Navigation of Murcia, with the support of the Institute for the Development of the Region of Murcia (INFO) and co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The objective was clear: to promote our products in the Russian market, generate quality contacts, explore new ways of commercial expansion and strengthen the international presence of Murcian companies.
However, beyond the figures and technical data, this mission represented an enriching human and professional experience, marked by encounters, cultural contrasts and many opportunities for growth.
Why Russia?
In an increasingly interconnected world, looking to new markets is essential to ensure the sustainable growth of any company. And Russia, with its huge territory, population of more than 140 million people and growing interest in quality European products, represents a market with great export potential.
While it presents specific challenges – such as bureaucracy, geographical distance, cultural differences or legal requirements – it also offers many opportunities for those willing to understand its business logic.
During the mission, we not only had the opportunity to present our products, but also to observe local consumption trends, understand the priorities of the Russian customer and assess the adaptations necessary to position themselves in that environment.
A carefully organized mission
Thanks to the coordinated work of the Murcia Chamber of Commerce, INFO and European ERDF funds, this mission was planned in detail to maximize the impact of each participating company.
Before the trip, preparatory meetings were held, market reports were offered, personalized agendas of meetings with potential partners, distributors and importers were organized . Each step was focused on ensuring that companies made the most of their time on Russian territory.
During the days of stay, we had the opportunity to meet with representatives of local companies, attend B2B meetings, visit distribution centers, discover the commercial dynamics of different regions and, above all, establish personal and professional relationships of trust.
From Murcia to Moscow: a journey beyond language
The mission officially began in Moscow, the capital and economic heart of the country. A vibrant, modern city, of intense contrasts, where glass skyscrapers coexist with historic buildings, and where business conversations begin with a coffee and end with a handshake… or an invitation to dinner.
In this context, each meeting becomes an exercise in diplomacy, empathy and adaptation. The language, punctuality, the way of presenting a product or negotiating prices… everything counts.
Thanks to the support of local interpreters and experts provided by the organization, we were able to overcome the initial language barriers and establish a productive dialogue with Russian interlocutors. We learned that, in Russia, direct contact, personal trust and respect for protocols are essential to advance in any business relationship.
The value of human contact
One of the most enriching aspects of this experience was to see that, beyond figures and business, what opens the doors in international trade is the human factor.
During the mission, we not only presented our products and our competitive advantages. We also had the opportunity to listen to the real needs of potential Russian customers, understand their expectations, and generate a dialogue based on transparency and mutual respect.
We found that Russian entrepreneurs particularly value quality, seriousness and responsiveness, and that they are open to collaborating with foreign companies as long as there is a long-term vision.
Advocacy, analysis and strategy
Throughout the trade mission, we not only focused on promoting our products, but also on analysing the market from the inside: what does the Russian consumer demand the most, which distribution channels are most effective, how does the seasonal factor influence imports, what is the profile of the ideal distributor for our products?
The answers to these questions are key to designing an effective internationalization strategy. The mission allowed us to collect first-hand data, observe the competition and adjust our offer to the reality of the local market.
In addition, direct contact with the environment helped us to identify possible logistical, customs or regulatory barriers that should be taken into account before starting any export operation to Russia.
An example of European cooperation
This type of initiative would not be possible without collaboration between public institutions, European funds and the regional business fabric.
The financial support of the ERDF, managed by INFO, allowed many companies to participate in the mission with accessible conditions, favouring the internationalisation of businesses that perhaps would not have had the capacity to take on this challenge alone.
It is a clear example of how cooperation between the local and the international, between the public and the private, can yield concrete results and open new doors for the economic development of our region.
Beyond the Business: A Cultural Experience
Participating in a trade mission also implies coming into contact with another culture, opening up to new ways of understanding time, communication, consumption and relationships.
During our trip we also had the opportunity to enjoy Russian culture, its gastronomy, its art, its hospitality and its millenary history. Stroll through Red Square, try a traditional borsch, watch the snow falling on the rooftops of St. Petersburg or listen to local music in a typical restaurant… They are experiences that leave a mark and remind us that business is also built with shared emotions and experiences.
Conclusion: an open door to the future
The Trade Mission to Russia has been, for our company, much more than a one-off promotional action. It has been a transformative experience that has allowed us to broaden horizons, create new alliances, observe our product from another perspective and above all, grow as a team and as a project.
We firmly believe in the importance of opening up to the world, of betting on innovation, of adapting and of not being afraid of the unknown. This mission has shown us that, with preparation, institutional support and entrepreneurial spirit, it is possible to take the quality of our region far beyond our borders.
And now that we are returning to Murcia, we do so with new ideas, new contacts, and a great desire to continue exploring, learning… and exporting.
