Happy Father’s Day

Although there is a date to celebrate the day of our father figures, we have every day of the year to tell them how much we love them and thank them for what they do for us. But, what is the origin of this celebration?

The true origin dates back to June 19, 1909, in the United States, when a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to honor her father for taking care of the education of six children after his wife died. Sonora realized that he had been a great example to follow and proposed the date of her father’s birth, June 19, to celebrate Father’s Day.

And in Catholic countries?

The date changes, as in the case of Spain, which is related to the feast of San José, the father of Jesus of Nazareth, celebrated on March 19.

In Spain, it was established from 1948, thanks to the perseverance and effort of a teacher from Madrid. She thought that fathers, like mothers, should also have their day of celebration, and the best date she came up with was March 19.

After publishing it in a newspaper, her proposal was very successful. So much so that José Fernández Rodríguez, (owner of ‘Galerías Preciados’), proposed to buy the idea by creating a press campaign.

Congratulations, dads!
