What is the content of the course?

The Spanish and Cooking course at the Instituto Hispánico de Murcia will cover topics related to the Spanish language, such as grammar, vocabulary, oral and written expression, as well as topics related to cooking, such as preparation of recipes, culinary techniques, etc.

The vocabulary of food, cooking methods, cooking utensils and taste can be complicated, and many learners may find it difficult if they don’t use them in everyday life. For this reason, we will make sure that you have enough time to learn new words. After all, if you don’t even know the difference between a fruit knife and a steak knife, you may find it harder to memorise these terms.

Oh, and one more thing: we take into account any dietary restrictions our students may have, especially those who come from non-pork or non-beef backgrounds. So it’s always a good idea to let us know in advance.

These are the main topics of this course:

  • Spanish and Murcian gastronomy: knowledge of the products of the Region of Murcia and how they are used in the kitchen.
  • The Mediterranean diet
  • Current trends in Spanish gastronomy and basic knowledge of new culinary techniques.
  • Important recipes of Spanish and Murcian gastronomy
  • Technical language in catering
  • Hygienic and sanitary measures in the kitchen

What does the Spanish and Cooking course include?

This course offers a unique opportunity to learn the basics of the Spanish language while enjoying Spanish cuisine. You will have the opportunity to learn concepts of Spanish grammar, as well as the ingredients and techniques of Spanish cuisine.

The course will also include the opportunity to visit some of the best restaurants in the city of Murcia to experience Spanish cuisine first hand. By the end of the course, you will have a thorough understanding of the Spanish language and an appreciation of Spanish cuisine.

It consists of:

  • 20 Spanish lessons per week.
  • 10 gastronomic activities per week: A visit to the local market: fruit, vegetables and sausage making, Murcian wine and cheese tasting, a visit to the traditional Mercado de Verónicas, making the typical Asian coffee of Cartagena, a guided visit to an olive oil mill to learn about the origin of the wonderful olive oil and tasting of oils (1 hour taxi ride), working with and watching TV programmes such as Masterchef, visits to several local families where they will teach you how to cook traditional recipes…
  • 5 meals with a member of Instituto Hispánico de Murcia in different typical restaurants in Murcia.
  • English-speaking school chaperone at all times.

Is previous knowledge of Spanish necessary?

As they say, you have to learn to walk before you can run, so we recommend that you have at least A2 level to get the most out of the course.

Are cooking exercises included?

Yes, the course includes cooking practice where you can put into practice what you have learnt in the theory classes and learn about Spanish cuisine in action. The specific cooking classes will take place in a popular local tapas bar.

We are very careful and conscious of your safety, so you will not have access to sharp materials or kitchen elements that can hurt you, such as fire or hot oil. Also, please note that a special permit is required in the treatment of foodstuffs to preserve hygiene in any restaurant kitchen.

How much does the course cost?

The course costs €895 per week per person, and includes Spanish classes, cooking classes, meals and all programme activities from Monday to Friday. This course requires the participation of at least two students.
